WORKBOOKS

Background

2 GLs started in Dec 2005 - one who had been group president for 10 years and as a Rover had been a WB scout leader. The other plus his wife had scouting background and wife also became Joey leader. Both are managers in the workplace and have great people skills. They did the March Phase 2 Seminar and the Joey Scout Leader did the basic in March. All 3 did the workbooks and had them complete end April.

Outcome

On the Friday night of the second weekend of the Phase 4 Seminar we did the phase 3 topics. The 2 GLs came to the Phase 4 with the precourse all complete and at the end of the 2 weekends had the rest complete except for sign off by team leader. It was suggested to them that where the precourse talked about programs, menus, campstuff etc that they look at it from a GL approval perspective.

Also DC from Grampians/Pyreenees, who has already completed basic and advanced workbooks in Scout section had completed all the books again at the end of the two weekends. At a GL meeting last week when another GL was commenting on the difficulty of motivating leaders to complete their books these two said the workbooks flow and are straight forward and the time taken to do the green book is not very long. It was very encouraging.

Training, Certificates and Jobs

Hi Claire, David and Jeff,

I just thought I’d let you know that my recent Cub Leader training has opened some doors for me in the workplace.

After my children were born I realised that for me there would be no going back to working in my previous job as a middle manager or to any job with similar demands. The service delivery work I then did in our family business dried up about five years ago and I started retraining, to position myself for work that I could do during school hours or as a contractor working in my own time.

Through various training and personal development courses I attended over the years, I had already covered quite a lot of the management and leadership material in the Cub Scout Basic and Advanced training that I have recently completed. I didn’t have any pieces of paper to show this, however.

Last week, I applied for a position teaching reading and writing skills next term at Healesville Living and Learning Centre. When I went for the interview, I was surprised to be offered two much more interesting positions, one including customer service and communication skills and the other developing a community newsletter. These positions will enable me to use a lot more of my skills and knowledge base and, if all goes well, will lead into further work at the Centre.

The program coordinator had looked at my resumé and seen the certificates in Business and Leadership that would enable me to teach these Certificated courses. (I hadn’t made the connection yet that I could now teach in these areas.) So I have a big thank you to Scouting Australia and to all my trainers who have helped me get through the training program of seven weekends (not counting the PLA course) in the previous twelve months, plus much paperwork.

It will be a bonus to work in beautiful Healesville. The Living and Learning Centre is near parkland on the road to Healesville Sanctuary and is surrounded by magnificent bush and blue hills. The drive to work will be through the lush Yarra Valley. The centre runs lots of classes for artists and craftspeople, so it’s a creative community. So overall, I feel very blessed.

Feel free to use this story when you are promoting the benefits of Scouting training.

Thank you again.

Best wishes
