Welcome to 2002. Term 4 2001 had a huge amount of activities for all scouting sections. We were successful in many of them where youth members, leaders and helpers, had fun. During the Christmas Holidays a number of us spent three consecutive evenings at the Scout Hall, preparing, and completing two coats of varnish on the timber floor. A special thank-you to David Morgan, Les Nethercott and Erich Grandin for many hours of hard work. The Annual Reporting Meeting and BBQ will be held on Sunday February 24th 2002 at 4:00pm. All committee positions are available for nominations. One of the Group Leaders responsibilities is to appoint a Committee that will be progressive with varying ideas and drive to grow and move our Scout Group forward. In the History of our Group we have been extremely well blessed with wonderful Committees. Please think about nominating and joining this year. Positions available: President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary, Hall Maintenance, Membership Secretary and General Committee. I urge all families to join us and make this an enjoyable event, not only as a quick review on the past years achievements and activities but also to recognize the contributions that have been made by our leaders and group committee. It is also a huge group social event for Parents and Children alike. Please mark it in your diary now. A big event this year is the CUBoree, which is to be held Tuesday 9th April until Saturday 13th April 2002. The theme is “It’s MAGIC”. A great numbers of our Leaders, Committee, Parents and older Youth Members are involved in running Sub-Camp #4. Good luck to all who have committed their time and energy to make it very successful. As a Scout Group, we are endeavoring to
improve our communication by the introduction of an e-mail register.
(Please advise your e-mail address [or changes] to me on
‘gl.glenwaverley2nd@vicscouts.asn.au’. The Leaders and Group Committee need your support in all activities, including, assistance on a week-to-week basis and fundraising. Remember that fundraising assists in keeping the Group Fees down. Please also support and encourage your children to participate in the many activities that your Leaders prepare and present for your children's enjoyment and development. Good luck for the New Year. Yours in Scouting, John Chapman
Fourth Term is a fairly busy fund raising period for the PSG. We have our annual Jumble Sale, closely followed by our week in the Opportunity Shop at Mount Waverley and then our 4th term Pie Drive. Whilst all of these activities were successful in generating funds for the group, the Jumble Sale this year was well down on previous year’s results. Whilst talking about fund raising I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the PSG for their assistance and support throughout the year. I would also like to thank Leanne Bridges for her assistance with the Pie Drives and for being the one to suggest that we collect Paul’s Milk Bottle Tops – a suggestion that has already raised in excess of $250 dollars for the group. Activities for youth members have finished for the year. However the need for maintenance activities continues. Many of you may not know, but the external sewage pipes at the rear of the Hall have been vandalised twice in 3 weeks. We are now looking at the costs of caging all of these pipes as it is costing in excess of $800 to repair the second lot of damage. In addition we need to resurface the Hall floor before activities recommence. David Morgan will be rounding up some eager volunteers early in the New Year. Depending upon the availability of the tradesman, we intend tiling the Ladies and Gents toilets. Lastly we have planned some electrical work for the kitchen, exterior lighting and switchboard. We are still in the very vulnerable position of having no female leader for the Scout section and we would also like at least one additional female leader for the Cub section. If anyone is interested in taking on a leadership role would they please contact John Chapman on 9802 4225. Be warned, lacking any volunteers the press gang will be employed! First term 2002 is already shaping up as a busy one for all sections, particularly the Cub section as they prepare for Cuboree 2002 at Gilwell Park. The leaders are preparing their programs and it is up to all of us to support them as they continue to provide our children with an interesting and enjoyable scouting experience. Erich J Grandin You Name It It’s been an interesting time for the crew these past few months. A lot of effort has gone in to organising our 8 week hike along the alpine walking track. So far the team has been forced to skip a few parts due to poor conditions and people injuring themselves (nothing too serious so far!), but we’re determined to get the whole hike done. Other activities have included formally investing our new Rover Advisor Geoff Selton into the crew, during a night hike along the Puffing Billy track. He is already proving a great asset, with his unquenchable enthusiasm. We have also played watermelon rugby, which was great fun if somewhat messy. The night spent playing the “black bag game” with the Venturers was great fun, although a lot of people at Chadstone shopping centre must have thought we were very strange. In December we ran the District Pool Competition, with representatives from all the other local crews. Unfortunately we were unable to hold on to the title this year, with Rob and Toby winning every ones of their games except the semi-final. For a bit of fun we also held a fondue night with Frank Moon Rovers, and a funny photo competition with our former sponsor crew, Nonarmi. To finish the year we held our own cocktail night, then broke up with dinner at the Burvale. David The Napier Park Venturers put together some great activities in the last term as well as completing a small amount of badge work. Starting the term with 9 members we ended the year with 7 as our two oldest members Kelly and Jan declared their innings closed and moved on to the lovely Blackflats Rover Crew. Over the term three holidays Tineke, Tim, Jacinta and Jeremy completed our Expedition 1 hikes and handed in most marvelous logbooks (eventually). Kelly completed her Queen scout award holding the presentation on the 5th October. Jan also completed his with just minutes to spare and will hold his presentation early on in term one. Term activities consisted of a skating night at Roller-Rama resulting in only a few sore limbs, a few games of pool another night was a lot of fun, and a Black bag night with the Rover Crew at Chadstone kept the security guards on their toes. The BBQ at the hall wasn’t a disaster as the hall is still standing. We believe everyone enjoyed themselves on Vic Gathering including our leader Paul who enjoyed bumming around in his tent. Activities included swimming, canoeing, jelly wrestling, shooting, a jumping castle, a giant slide, an all night disco and plenty of day time siestas. Sean hosted the term break up with his parents doing an excellent job of putting up with all of us. This year we are hoping to recruit a few
new members and get stuck into our badge work. From your Venturers First I would like to start with wishing all our scouting friends and families a happy and prosperous New Year. It seems strange to be writing this report now, with term 4 having finished nearly 7 weeks ago. Term 4 started with a games night after the spring holidays. The first weekend we took 2 patrols hiking, with Cara Nethercott and Luke Burgess as patrol leaders to Somers Shield Competition at Mt Disappointment, north of Melbourne. In a combined effort, out of 25 attending patrols, we won the Somers Shield!!!! An absolutely great effort after relatively little preparation. Well done!!! The following week a combined night was organised with the Venturers and Rovers, where there was the going up ceremony for Sean Herlihy to Venturers who also completed all of the requirements for his adventurer cord. During the night one of the highlights was the investiture of Geoff Selton into the group and his appointment as Rover Advisor. Welcome Geoff and congratulations!!! After all this the Venturers and Rovers held a talk to the scouts about the various activities in their sections and what the requirements are for the Queen Scout and Baden Powell badges. Next night all scouts attended a great night at the rock-climbing centre in Nunawading, a night to be repeated some time this year! A bring a Mum night was not as well attended as we would have hoped, some Mums were notably absent. Possibly too scared we might pull some tricks!!! Hopefully all will attend this year. Scout-hike this year was a very wet and cold weekend where Peter took 5 scouts away. Despite the cold/wet conditions they still managed to achieve silver (missing gold by one point). Well done everybody!!!! On our constructions night we attempted to build a bridge but unfortunately rain stopped this effort. At the Hawthorn Town Hall Sean Herlihy was presented with his adventurer cord. A big achievement for a scout. It was a close but strong effort. Well done Sean and congratulations!!!! We were very sorry to have to cancel our sailing night on the bay due to bad weather. We are planning another night during first term. Arnie (Annette Kleinert, for the ones that don’t know, but that wouldn’t be many) organised another great night for the scouts. Where do you get these great ideas, Arnie??? Thankyou very much, the nights you did last year were very much appreciated and enjoyed by us all. Hope to see you again this year!!! The fun camp at Rosebud was well attended by Scouts, Rovers, Leaders and Parents alike, it was great to see you all there. Some fantastic cooking by Eric and Michael saw us all well fed. The only drawbacks were the sleepless nights (trouble makers) and a very wet ending. Our last night we finished with an intended BBQ at Nortons Park but again the weather forced us to change our plans and instead we had our BBQ at the Hall. Thankyou to all the parents and other leaders who helped out during the year in various capacities. Hope to see you all healthy, wealthy and wise in the New Year. The Scout Leaders This term started off with a bang, or rather a clash crash. The Pack Holiday, held at Riddels Creek with a Viking theme, was a success. We made Viking helmets, shields, ships and fortresses. On the side, we chased the resident kangaroos. The participation of many parents contributed greatly to the success, and we would like to thank Julie Fall and David Eggington for cooking, Bill van Nieuwenhoeven, Debbie Sekula and Alan Baird for helping entertain and manage the Cubs. A Cub Photo Album allowing us to share in the fun is attached for those receiving this Newsletter by email. Only a couple of weekends later we went to the Billy Cart Derby (Oct 21) and came away with First (the Fast and Furious team of Nicholas Fall, Sam Rolfe, William Kleppsch,) and Third (the Cool Dudes of Paul Nicholas, Mark Paterson, Tristan van Nieuwenhoeven and Ben Keillor). Congratulations to all! Only 3 weekends after that our ten-year-olds – Lauren Bowen, Genevieve Gibson, Ann Richardson, Andre Selton, Rodney France, James Eggington, Michael Stevenson, Manuela Saner, Samir Balmer, Stephen Buckle and Steven Whatman - went off to the District 10 YO camp, where they learned Scouting ways, like erecting and taking down the big tents and the dining fly, building a wash stand, cooking, washing their own dishes. They went on a very long hike, armed only with written instructions and a compass. Due to a shortage of leaders, several groups actually completed the course on their own. Finally, they were taught even more First Aid. This may go towards the Yellow Cord requirements, the highest decoration a Cub can earn, for those who have the persistence to complete it. We must mention that we were helped a lot by Scouts Helaine Crawford and Amy Brear. In between all these excursions we finished more Boomerang work, went swimming at Ashburton Pool, and finally wound up with a picnic at Jells Park. A year of hard work on the Boomerang material is paying off. Lauren Bowen, Genevieve Gibson, Andre Selton and Tim Pape earned Gold Boomerangs. Martin Zwarteveen, James Mainwaring and Tim White earned Silver. Tristan van Nieuwenhoeven, Jason Sekula, William Kleppsch, Rachel Borg-Manche and Sam Rolfe all finally got their Bronze Boomerangs, and, at the last minute, so did Jack Almond, Nicholas Fall and Shanan Bridges. It will certainly be easier from here on in, as the Bronze one always takes the longest. Mark Paterson, Tim Pape and Nathan Baker all received their Yellow Cord. Well done cubs. Have we forgotten anybody anywhere? Please help us keep up-to-date! Your Cub Leaders As Term Four has finished we can look back and reflect on another busy term. Our Mob enjoyed a variety of themes throughout the term. They included Construction / Lego, followed by International Night (Holland), Fish, and Melbourne Cup Racing. Our Nutbush Night, had all of us showing our dancing skills, with the entire Prior clan (mum, dad, and kids) joining in. A Bike Night took the Joeys, parents and leaders for a bike ride from the scout hall through Shepherds Bush to Jells Park and back again. Christmas covered two nights with cards and decorations being made. The term / year finished with a joint night with the Cubs, and their families, with a picnic dinner and barbecue at Jells Park. The Joey Scout Zoo Day was held on Saturday November 17. Every two years, Joeys from all over Victoria meet at the Royal Melbourne Zoo, this event is equivalent to the Scout Jamboree, and the Cub Cuboree. This year we had five of our Joeys and their families attend, with a great time had by all. We welcomed back Emma Roberts to our Joey mob after her overseas stay. We had 3 Joeys commence their link badge, Emma Roberts, Naomi Peck, and Nicole Richardson. We say goodbye to the following Joeys as they move up to Cubs and commence their link badge in Term 1, 2002, Luke Newall, Mathew Shepheard, Declan O’Neill, and Andrew Whatman. Many thanks to all the parents and
scouts for their help and assistance throughout the year. Hoping you all
had a happy and safe new year. Joey Leaders
